Background:
|
Trowbridge Street School of Discovery is a traditional elementary school, which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is situated just 2.5 blocks from Lake Michigan — the closest MPS school to this educational and environmental resource. The Trowbridge school community has worked together to add to and enhance the curricular focus to one of Great Lakes Studies.
On October 30, 2007, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors formally approved the extension of the school’s technology and discovery curriculum to include Great Lakes Studies curriculum.
On October 20, 2017, Principal Tom Matthews submitted a letter to the Superintendent requesting that the school be renamed Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies to make the school’s curriculum more recognizable. The school administration surveyed parents, students, and staff in regard to this proposed name change with the option of Great Lakes versus Fresh Water Studies. The majority of the school’s stakeholders chose Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies.
Trowbridge also meets the criteria set forth in Administrative Policy 5.01, Facilities, which includes a section (6) on the naming of school facilities:
“b. Changing the name of a school building shall be limited to elementary and middle schools. The recommendation of a name change shall be brought to the Board through the local governance structure of the school.”
The Administration has adhered to Administrative Policy 5.01, especially relative to allowing school communities pursuing a name change the autonomy to select one through a collaborative process through the local governance structure of the school and bringing proposed name changes to the Board for approval.

This item does not authorize expenditures. Any costs associated with the name change will be absorbed in the school's FY18 budget.

Implementation and Assessment Plan
:

Upon approval by the Board, the Administration will work with the school to implement the name change.

Recommendation:
|
The Administration recommends that the Board approve renaming Trowbridge Street School of Discovery and Technology to Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies.
