Background: Each month, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors recognizes an outstanding school, student, staff member, parent, or community member for a display of excellence, achievement, and innovation that may serve as an example to our school district and the entire Milwaukee community. This month, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors is pleased to present the “Excellence in Education Award” to:

Edwina Matthews

Milwaukee Public Schools recognizes Edwina Matthews for her dedication in providing Milwaukee’s youth with exceptional learning experiences.

For the past fifteen years, Ms. Matthews has been working with Samuel Clemens School fourth graders for 14 hours a week to help build their reading skills. Clemens Principal Garry Lawson commented that, “She is truly dedicated to the students. She wants more than anything for them to be productive citizens.” She has also contributed to the school culture by making strong connections with Samuel Clemens families.

Ms. Matthews' desire for kids to have a bright future began many years ago. Her cousin inspired her to become a teacher. As a graduate of MPS herself, in 1967 she began teaching at Garfield. She remained in the classroom for thirty-seven years, making sure that every student had the opportunity to succeed in school.

A further testament to her dedication to Milwaukee's children is community-wide recognition. Ms. Matthews was presented with the 2019 TMJ4 Positively Milwaukee! Inspiring Senior Award for her commitment to Milwaukee’s young people.

Her experiences extend beyond education. In the 1960’s she marched alongside Father James Groppi for fair housing. She even walked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and took part in causes along with Vel Phillips to improve Milwaukee.

Matthews’ philosophy is simple. “If I’m there for these kids…maybe later on, these kids will think, Ms. Matthews was there to help me… maybe one day, they will reach out and help someone.” This attitude of serving others has given MPS students, families, and staff over fifty years of dedication.

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors recognizes and honors Edwina Matthews for her dedication, outstanding leadership, and commitment to excellence on behalf of the students of the Milwaukee Public Schools.
